Back to the Past: The Grand Tour and the Golden Mile

Achelous travel - Campolieto Villa, Herculaneum

Welcome back everyone!

The article you are about to read is the result of a long and detailed historical research. We hope that the wait is rewarded by the information that we provide and that we consider very interesting.
The area that we want to introduce is the so-called " Golden Mile", the stretch of road lined with beautiful baroque villas ( Vesuvian Villas ), who comes from Naples to Torre Annunziata , via Portici and Ercolano. In Naples
700 becomes the Enlightenment cultural center of Europe, a place that attracts for its natural beauty and the charm of myth and history.
In 1738 the Bourbon royal family and many noble families choose to Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, to build the new palace and aristocratic palaces, simultaneously with the beginning of the excavations at Herculaneum.
In this period was born the concept of cultural tourism modern to complete their education, young European aristocrats, intellectuals, diplomats, attend the "Grand Tour " educational trip in search the testimonies of antiquity and the classics Greece and Rome. Naples was the last and most attractive Italian venue. Arriving in Naples, the journey was often no return because the traveler fell in love with the place so much that he decided to stay there forever. It 's the case of Lord William Beckett, who fell madly in love Ravello and stayed there forever.
Today it is not easy to retrieve the size of wonder and curiosity that characterizes the protagonists of the Grand Tour, but you can still visit some places where you can share intense emotions such as those described by Goethe in his "Italian Journey":

" (...) You'll never really adjusted to give an idea of \u200b\u200bthis sea, this bay, this Vesuvius of this city with its suburbs, and with its castles, and above all of this air we breathe. (...) How to describe the magnificence of the streets, squares, gardens, the sea, when illuminated by the moonlight, as I see them lit up tonight? Are taken from the vertigo of infinite space, and the sweet charm my mind is dreaming things that only you can dream here. "- Wolfgang Goethe

To relive those emotions back over the Golden Mile: the Royal Palace Portici , Villa Campolieto and Villa Ruggiero Herculaneum, and all the other houses nearby, we will report at the time of the Bourbons and their court. We can not fail to visit the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum and Oplontis, and the famous ruins of Pompeii to be fascinated by the myth of Roman classicism.
Interesting in this area, Virtual Archaeological Museum of Herculaneum, a center of culture and technology applied to the history. We conclude
our journey with an ascent to cone of Vesuvius , to get to the cause of so much death and destruction, and yet so much history.
Contact us and we will help you design and live that dream.

Pontecagnano Faiano

History
is the most southern Etruscan site. The Etruscan city, which flourished between the eighth and fourth centuries BC C. and of which we have the testimony of material from more than 7000 tombs and sanctuaries of Demeter and Apollo. The material found in the necropolis is rich and meaningful, especially since it includes a rich collection of ceramics, the bill which attests to the influence of Corinthian. The municipality includes the two main centers of Pontecagnano and Faiano. The ancient city had an important port, whose website is located at the mouth of the river Picentino. Faiano, however, is the first house built on hills and Picentini foothills of the mountains, where the sea water invaded the lowland populations and also for security reasons imposed by the Saracen raids, moved to the upper tiers. Around the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1843, developed the new urban center of Pontecagnano, as the capital of the Plain Picentino. The fight for autonomy for the town was carried out between 1890 and 1911, by a committee, chaired by Advocate Amedeo Moscati, who was then, after the establishment of the new municipality in 1911, elected the first mayor. Pontecagnano was then the seat of the Roman Picenza, the capital of Piceni, located in the vast area stretching from the mouth of the Sele river Sarno. Towards the end of the eighteenth century began the reclamation of the plain, in the course of the next century it was bought to crops, allowing the reconstruction of the city at the site where the old one had been thriving.

Vandals are you!

From here

The story on this blog

After the tour the eighth dwarf Pìriolo was promptly reported to the valley. Why do these religious
hikers can not do so? Many are respectful of the mountain!
If they need to venerate icons, lest they bring with them all the way up the peaks? We need to fix a bronze statue, 70 cm to the ancient rocks?
see for yourself what they have done and published these photos!
Rock on which to put the statue
Detail of rock
The placement of the statue was a sacrilege! The three anchor rods, blue resin for fixing the base ... how will the trachyte remedy this mess? It will take thousands of years.
Here, these people have no sense at all of the mountain, or nature. Walkers are not like that and expect that every hiker distance itself from this act of vandalism. They are also too poor religious if they need a material representation to be fairly faithful. As I wrote up a crucifix by Pietro Lando: "And worship him dovemo et not this wood." I do not understand how they did it also to obtain approval by the Park Hills.

TOMORROW MORNING PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

The year 2011 opens up the banner of celestial phenomena. It begins with a meteor shower and then with a partial eclipse of the sun. Viewed dal'Italia the lunar disk cover 70% of that of the sun, leaving visible a "crescent of the Sun." Most of the coverage we will have between 9 and 9.30 and since the sky should be quite clear of clouds viewing promises to be satisfactory. At Salerno, you can see the partial eclipse beginning at 7.52, the peak will occur at 9.11, while the end of the eclipse is scheduled for 10.41 hours. For those who would then want to observe the phenomenon, however it is recommended to protect your eyes with goggles with filter. Avoid makeshift solutions, such as tinted windows, to avoid the risk of serious damage to the retina. The Centro Astronomico "Neil Armstrong" in Salerno will be Salerno, Piazza Cavour, on the promenade in front of the Provincial Government Building, from 07:30 to 11:30, with telescopes adequately protected and available to provide answers to any curiosity. Transportation, 400 passengers on the bus "Christmas House"

More than 400 passengers with an average of 50 a day: this is the initial result of "Christmas House", the project wanted by the Transportation of the Province of Salerno to facilitate, in a particular period such as Christmas, users in moving through the city . L 'provincial department has set up a toll free line for those arriving or leaving the services of the 'airport of Salerno. "A bus that connects the 'airport Salerno Costa d' Amalfi 'with the main points of the city's parking, a service that represents a real alternative to the use of private cars and, therefore, in addition to offering an opportunity for users limits the negative effects on the environment due to high traffic Christmas. " The vehicle also provides a service on board for the 'reception of tourists by giving them information about the city of Salerno and its attractions, even in English and service promotion and tasting of typical products. The initiative is completed with the project, sponsored by the provincial "free flights", dedicated to over sixty, with families and young people with low incomes. These may submit a request at the Department to obtain a free flight and return to the lines that are served by 'airport of Salerno.
